History:
Introduced to market in 2004 by Robert Seals the founder and
inventor of Klean Kanteen. Shortly after Klean Kanteen was sold to the Cresswell
Family in 2005 where they expanded and perfected the canteen industry.
In 2008 Klean Kanteen Became part of the 1% for the planet, donating more than 1% of its
profits to the restoration and preservation of our environment.
Current Products:
Reusable bottles, special edition reusable bottles, caps,
cups, tumblers, slings, children’s canteens, sippy cups, food canisters, and
reusable sports bottles.
Geographical locations:
Produced and manufactured in China but sold
internationally at sports, outdoor and food stores and store chains. REI is a major supplier.
Company Culture:
Klean Kanteen is family owned and operated. Under “Our
Story” Section of their website it says.“ We are fathers, mothers, sisters,
brothers, children, and friends. We are a small, family-owned and -operated
company in northern California with more than 30 years of history and an
enduring commitment to product and service excellence.”
Klean Kanteen Sponsors many events such as the Floyd Fest in Virginia. Klean Kanteen helped
build a commercial well for the event and sponsored it with their products. Klean
Kanteen Has a very environmentally friendly culture with all of its staff and
partnerships working toward creating a clean environment.
Stage:
Klean Kanteen is in stage 5 of Lawrence Kohlberg’s stages because it
is a very ethical company that is completely aware of its social duties. It is
fully aware of its responsibility to its surroundings and goes above and beyond
what is necessary to please the society.
Code of Ethics or Code of Conduct:
Although the company does not have a stated code I know from researching
it that it has a strong code of ethics. The code requires that the company take
several initiatives to please all of its stakeholders while reducing the amount of
negatively affected stakeholders.
Manufacturing and Human Resources:
Manufacturing and Human Resources seem to get the most attention out of the functions. Their website emphasizes their responsibility in creating BPA free products. They explain that they do not manufacture their product alongside plastic products. They also emphasize their workplaces are healthy and they evaluate employees regularly.
Human Resources:
The human resources level seems to get the most attention when doing my
research on the company. Human resources it put forth in the company as number
one. Klean Kanteen Evaluates all of its employees and top managers like Jeff
Cresswell personally meets with employees to evaluate them.
Conflict of Interest:
I See the company creating a conflict of interest
between is social responsibility and its responsibility to shareholders. The
company gives a lot of its money and time into things that may not make the
shareholders as profitable as they would like. There is no hard evidence that
this is a conflict but with the huge social responsibility that the company
takes on its quite obvious what their motive is.
Triple Bottom Line:
Triple bottom line is defined as detailed monitoring of an organizations
operational efficiency. The company does not provide this information to the
public but my guess is that the company does have a triple bottom line showing
the environmental efforts and progress alongside financial information.
CSR:
I would categorize this company as an ethical company because it takes
on more social responsibility than it needs to. It is part of several nonprofit
organizations and gives more than 1% of its profits back into the environment.
Evolution/Revolution:
As stated from the website, “ in 2002 there were no
stainless steel water bottles for personal hydration.” Now Klean Kanteen is the
top seller of reusable stainless steel products. Jeff Creswell led the company
into fast growth and expansion. In 2008 the media started warning of the dangers
of BPA, with Klean Kanteen products being BPA free its sales boosted. Today the
company strives in helping people make sustainable choices and continues to
expand its product line.
Corporate Governance:
There is a lot of evidence of effective Corporate
Governance within this company. The company Is very transparent and it allows all of its decisions to be
publicly evaluated. Is is a family owned and operated company, all decisions are
made by every member of the higher management.
