Clif Bar was created by Gary Erickson in 1990. Gary was a baker and former mountain tour guide. Gary would take all kinds of energy bars on his bike tours but none onf them really satisfied him. That's when he decided to create his own energy bar.
After 2 years of experimenting in his mother's kitchen, he finally settled on a recipe for what would be called a Clif Bar. He named his energy bar his father, Clifford. He got the packing image of a rock climber from his friend Doug Gilmore, who drew it on a napkin at dinner in San Francisco.
Erickson then debuted his first 3 flavors: Double Chocolate, Apricot, and Date Oatmeal. You could only find Clif Bar's in local bike shops at the time because he got his idea from giving bike tours so he wanted bike riders like him to feel energized while riding. In 1999, he introduced the Luna Bar which was designed for women.
Sales in the first year alone exceeded $700,000 dollars. Saled doubled each year and by 1997 the company made $20 million dollars. In 2000, Erickson turned down Quaker Oats offer to buy Clif Bar Company for $120 million dollars. A good decision by Erickson as they were then ranked #1 in Forbes "Breakaway Brands" and his company contiuned to grow.

I believe Clif Bar is in stage 3: "Good boy/nice girl" Orientation. It means a person is focused on meeting the expectations of family members- that is, something is right or wrong because it pleases the family memebers. Stereotypical behavior and conformity to that behavior develops.

Human Resources arent really talked about at Clif Bar Company. Clif Bar Company is such an easy-going company that they dont tend to have problems. The employees all get a long great so there are no issues or rule breaking. Human Resources justs get mentioned at Clif Bar, its not a major role in the company. I would say Research and Development would take the lead role because they do all the backround work for the company. Then they send down the information to Manufacturing and they manufacture it. Human Resource's just kind of sits in the back and make sure everyting goes smoothly. And with a company like Clif Bar, it usually does.

There is a ton of conflict of interst as there are many different energy bar companies. But they say they dont worry about any other company, they just focus on themselves and do the best they can.

I would catgorize Clif Bar as an Altruistic CSR. Which means to give back to your community. He gave back to his community by supporting local bike shops. He would share the profits with them as a way of saying thank you.
